The Board acknowledges the need for chaperones to support staff during school-related activities. The Board defines a chaperone as a district employee, parent or adult community member who volunteers to work on a temporary basis at a school site or off-campus event for the students under the immediate supervision and direction of a certified teacher or staff member, and are expected to comply with all rules and regulations set forth by the District.
The Board approves the use of staff, parental or community members as school chaperones, and will consider any chaperone a volunteer of the School District. As such, the Board will generally approve the coverage of chaperones under the District’s workers’ compensation insurance in order to provide coverage in instances of injury that occur during the time that the chaperone is acting as a volunteer worker of the district. The approval will be done during a regular meeting of the Board.
The Board authorizes the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee to establish guidelines and procedures for the chaperones for school-related activities. At the discretion of the Superintendent, non-employee chaperones may be required to undergo a criminal history check.
All chaperones will abide by the school chaperone rules established by the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee, and will be given a copy of this policy and any subsequent regulations or procedures. A copy of this policy and subsequent regulations will be provided to each chaperone. (July, 2013)
